Cough-gate: ‘Pretty crazy’ By Gordon Findlater BERNIE SMITH is hoping the recently-completed world darts championship isn’t his only appearance on the sport’s biggest stage. However, if it is, he will always be remembered for being part of a great piece of sporting controversy. Smith was a part of what has been labelled ‘cough-gate’ when he was knocked out in the first round of the world championship by England’s Justin Pipe. Pipe, the world No 27, became the ultimate villain at the tournament after he was seen

coughing behind Smith as the 53-year-old from Christchurch attempted to throw a dart for double 10 which would have won him the match.

Within 24 hours of the incident, the footage of Pipe’s cough was making headlines around the world after Sky Sport UK commentator and

former pro, Wayne Mardle, pointed out the cough during coverage the following day. “That was a tactic for advantage, that was a tactic to make Bernie Smith miss and he got his way,” said Mardle. “The DRA (Darts Regulation Authority) have to do something . . . that was disgusting.” Smith, who is a plasterer, arrived home on Christmas Day and is currently spending time with family at his holiday home in Hanmer Springs. After having some time to wind down from darts’ biggest stage, he was still downplaying the ‘coughgate’ saga. •Turn to page 7

By Bridget Rutherford THE CITY’S worst intersection for red light-running saw more than 600 motorists do just that in one day alone. Data provided to The Star showed the worst was Moorhouse Ave and Colombo St, where 666 motorists ran red lights. Most of them were approaching the intersection from the east along Moorhouse Ave. No 2 on the list was Chalmers St, Goulding Ave and Main South Rd, where 596 vehicles were detected running reds. Main North and Johns Rds was the third worst. At the city’s 15 worst intersections, 7224 motorists were detected running red lights. That jumped from 6580 last year, and 5000 in 2015. The figures come as the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre is undertaking a project to test how bad red light-running is across the city to come up with ways to curb the problem. Changes could include altering the amber traffic signal and the “all-red phase” – where every signal was red at the same time at an intersection – by up to 1sec. The list was collated by the CTOC over 24 hours on November 30. Canterbury road policing manager Senior Sergeant Kelly Larsen said running amber and red lights was “high-risk behaviour.” •Turn to page 3

Where are the worst red light-runners?

Police urge drivers to take a breath, slow down, and make safe, courteous driving choices.” CTOC manager Ryan Cooney said it would test red lightrunning using Kelly Larsen CCTV cameras at intersections. Software had been developed to identify from the video footage when vehicles had run red lights. He said the intersection of Idris and Wairakei Rds had been used as a test, which proved the method was accurate. CTOC was now testing red light-running on an “arterial in Bishopdale.” Mr Cooney could not reveal the location as doing so would affect driver behaviour. Once that was completed and proved accurate, a live counting trial would start at intersections across the city, he said. “The current work is preparing the infrastructure (minor modifications to traffic signals and CCTV) in order to undertake the live counting trial. “

CRASH VICTIM CRITICAL A person is in a critical condition after a three-car crash in Russley on Tuesday night. Emergency services were called to Russley Rd (State Highway One), near the intersection with Bentley St, at about 10.40pm. A police spokesperson was reported as saying it appeared two cars had hit a third parked vehicle. Firefighters cut one occupant from the wreckage and that person was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition. Two other occupants were also taken to hospital, one with serious injuries the other with moderate injuries. Earlier in the evening firefighters cut free another person from a crashed vehicle in Redwood who was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Cooney said the results would be known by late February. Then, any changes to traffic signal timings could be decided and implemented, he said. In 2016, the worst site for red light-runners was the intersection of Blenheim Rd and Mandeville St with 656. The corner of Moorhouse Ave and Colombo St, was second with 647.

Concerns over another quarry plan

Rolleston blaze ANOTHER SCRUB fire flared up in Rolleston yesterday. The blaze spread through an area 100m x 5m and was tackled by a number of appliances and a helicopter near Tresillian Drive at 1.30pm. The fire was contained by 2.30pm. Firefighters are taking no chances after a huge fire destroyed a number of houses forced the evacuation of residents near Rolleston on December 23 and another ripped through nearly 100ha on Christmas Day near Hororata.

This week Fulton Hogan put forward a plan for a 170ha quarry on Templeton’s Dawsons, Curraghs and Jones Rds. The announcement comes as Yaldhurst residents continue to battle the noise and dust effects from nearby quarries, which have forced them to wear protective face masks outside their own homes. Testing stations have been set up in Yaldhurst to monitor air quality. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said the proposal has sparked “major concerns” for nearby homes in terms of dust, noise and heavy traffic. “The more we look into it, there are more and more issues there are . . . the dust and noise has the potential to reduce house prices. People could be out of pocket because of this,” he said. In a letter sent to residents near the proposed quarry, Fulton Hogan said it would be there for 25 to 40 years

SLOW DRIVER FINED A rental vehicle travelling to Christchurch from Akaroa on Saturday was pulled over by police and the driver was fined for driving too slow. Included in the queue of 40 vehicles built up behind it was an off-duty police officer. Sergeant Alex Pickover, who was on a day off, said the vehicle was travelling 50km/h in a 100km/h zone on Christchurch Akaroa Rd. “There were quite a few vehicles backed up behind it before police pulled the driver over. It was quite a hold-up for a number of motorists,” he said.

Others that could be classed as priority buildings include those with unreinforced masonry which could fall on pedestrian and traffic thoroughfares during an earthquake, or those that could impede important transport routes. The city council will undertake public consultation this year to ask where these areas are. From there, it will be able to identify any other buildings that may require re-prioritisation. Historic document to release secrets

UK experts to examine Canterbury Roll at university

By Kurt Bayer A UNIQUE medieval manuscript dating back to the bloody War of the Roses and acquired by Canterbury University a century ago, is being examined for hidden secrets of its origins. The extraordinary 600-year-old English illuminated genealogical scroll, known as the Canterbury Roll, was acquired the university in 1918 and is the only genealogical roll in the Southern Hemisphere. It was once owned by pioneering Christchurch Chris Jones nurse Sibylla Emily Maude, and medieval historian senior lecturer Chris Jones says it is the most significant and substantial medieval artefact in New Zealand. For the past century, Canterbury University has been guardian of the rare 15th-century

artefact, which tells the history of England from its mythical origins to the late Middle Ages. “No one has anything like this in New Zealand or Australia and it’s utterly bonkers that no one really knows we have it, because it’s magnificent,” said Dr Jones. “It’s visually striking. The Wars of the Roses are what Game of Thrones is based on, and this is

the Wars of the Roses laid out across a 5m visually spectacular document.” A team of British scientists arrive in Christchurch next week to conduct in-depth testing of the scroll with specialised equipment to look for “hidden” writing and any other information about its origins. It will involve ground-breaking

work never before been applied to this type of manuscript, Jones said. To mark the centenary of its acquisition, university staff and students are working on The Canterbury Roll Project to translate and digitise the document to make it more accessible to the world. The digitised version will be available to the public later this year.

The Canterbury Roll is a unique example of a medieval manuscript in New Zealand and Australia, Dr Jones said. “It is not the only manuscript roll from this period to exist in the world, but uniquely, it features contributions from both the key players in the Wars of the Roses – it was originally drawn up by the Lancastrian side in the conflict but it fell into Yorkist hands and they re-wrote part of it.” It is unclear how the Maude family acquired the document, although Dr Jones said that in 1918, the family believed they had owned it since the Middle Ages. Canterbury College professors bought the roll as part of an effort to help foster a sense of British identity in the closing days of World War I, Dr Jones said. “The roll is both an important part of European history and – after a century – an important part of the New Zealand story. “In particular, it embodies the way attitudes to colonialism have changed: it began as a celebration of New Zealand as a British colony; from the 1970s it was hidden away as an embarrassing reminder of that colonial past; today, it has been dusted off and is used in comparative teaching to explore differences and similarities between western concepts and whakapapa,’’ he said. – NZ Herald

Ferrymead event to celebrate tramway milestone IN 1968 it had been 14 years since the last tram ran in the central city. But 50 years ago on January 6 the Tramway Historical Society opened the first stage of the Ferrymead Heritage Park tramway. Secretary Dave Hinman said the society started out by hunting around for trams that had been sold off when the central city tramways closed in 1954.

This week the society has been preparing to mark the anniversary by re-enacting the 1968 opening ceremony in front of the main tram barn at 275 Bridle Path Rd. The event will be held on Saturday from 1.30pm. There will be tram rides over the original section of the line, as well as into the Ferrymead township. The park will then hold Steam

Sunday with steam trains running and the society’s tram barns and workshop will have historical displays. “We started out restoring the city’s heritage and now we’ve got our own to celebrate,” Mr Hinman said. Australian market for weight loss book By Kurt Bayer A CHRISTCHURCH mother who self-published a book detailing how she shed 20kg in nine months by just slashing sugar from her diet has secured a transtasman publishing deal. Amanda Tiffen wrote A Life Less Sugar: How I lost 20kg by reducing my sugar intake after her amazing weight-loss programme. Using a home printer she ran off copies before it was picked up by nationwide books retailer Paper Plus and went on to sell thousands of copies. Tiffen, 43, then teamed up with close friend Leigh Brown to launch a cookbook featuring 35 low-sugar recipes that also proved a major hit. Publishing powerhouse Harper Collins then contacted Tiffen with a proposal to work together.

Now, A Life Less Sugar has been given the glossy professional treatment and is available for sale in both New Zealand and Australia. “I’m really proud of it,” Tiffen said. “It’s quite amazing that it’s been achieved, the book is quite amazing. The amount of people that we can help in Australia is hard to comprehend.” The 272-page “part memoir, part diet and recipe book” compiles both of Tiffen’s earlier attempts while updates with new recipes and information. It tells how Tiffen had always struggled to keep her weight in check. She tried weight loss programmes, the gym, but nothing kept the kilos off. But four years, she saw a docu-

mentary on the perils of sugar which struck a chord. Afterwards, a quick survey of her cupboards and fridge discovered that most of what she ate, and thought to be healthy – muesli bars, fruit muffins, sandwiches, stir fry sauces, “low fat” packaged food, fruits – were in fact jam-packed with sugar. “It was a very big surprise,” she said. Tiffen slowly reduced her estimated daily consumption of 30 teaspoons of sugar to just six. She increased vegetables, protein and meat, while cutting carbohydrates. Over nine months, she lost a staggering 20kg “with absolute ease.” Amazed with the results, friends and family followed suit, with similar success. In a frantic fortnight, she wrote her book which is now on sale at most major booksellers on both sides of the Tasman. “I’ve seen it on the shelves at The Warehouse, it’s so exciting. The trend to organics will accelerate and most gardeners will be looking for natural-based fertilisers and low toxic pest controls. •Food plants are in. It’s everyone’s ambition to

have a vegetable garden. Even the smallest garden can find room for a herb pot. Beginners should start their herb garden with a pot of chives. They’re probably the easiest herbs to grow, and they tolerate a fair amount of neglect. •Edible gardens are in but in smaller spaces. Dwarf fruit trees in fashionable containers, and small-growing vegetable varieties are popular even for larger gardens. •Flowers in the garden will hit the comeback trail. Strappy-leafed plants and

foliage plants will still be in favour but their dominance will start to fade. A nostalgic hankering for flowering plants is beginning to surface. Plants that straddle both categories (day lilies, dwarf agapanthus and tulbaghia, also called society garlic, are good examples) will lead this resurgence. •Water (or lack of it) will be one of the biggest challenges. Cistus (rock rose), Indian hawthorn and the native mirror plants (Coprosma spp) are some of these tough survivors.

LAMB CHOPS WITH MINT SAUCE AND CRUSHED PEAS

Ingredients

4 Tbsp orange liqueur, or peach schnapps 6 white peaches 1 banana 1 cup vanilla custard 200g sponge cakes ¾ cup passionfruit pulp ¾ cup whipped cream

4 lamb shoulder chops Marinade 2 Tbsp olive oil ⅓ cup honey ½ cup fresh mint, chopped 2 Tbsp white wine vinegar ½ tsp salt Crushed peas 2 cups frozen peas 3 mint leaves, finely chopped 25g butter ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper 2 Tbsp creme fraiche

Directions Halve, peel, stone and thinly slice the peaches. Combine the schnapps with the custard. Cut the sponge into 2cm cubes. Place some sliced peaches in the base of six individual serving dishes or drinking glasses. Spoon a little passionfruit pulp over the top. Add some cubes of cake. Top with the custard, smoothing with a spoon. Add some whipped cream and smooth the top. Carefully place more peach slices and sliced banana on top and drizzle with a little more passionfruit pulp.

Directions Mix together all marinade ingredients and cover the lamb with it. Leave to marinate for one hour or overnight. Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Place the lamb chops in a roasting tray and cook for 7min then turn over and cook for a further 7min or until cooked through. Blanch the peas for 5min, drain and add the mint to the peas.

And the first plans contained on those papers go into action tomorrow night with a surprise at Cambridge and a champion in Perth. After a complete domination of Sunday’s Auckland Trotting Cup meeting – where they won seven of nine races they contested – Rolleston-based Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen sat down yesterday to plan where their army of pacing stars go next. The logistics are mindboggling, with not just tens of millions of dollars of horseflesh heading to all parts of Australasia, requiring flights, ground transportation and handlers, but the bookings for all the staff who need to be in New South Wales and Victoria weeks before the race track action starts. The blueprint for the rest of the all-conquering stable was only confirmed on Tuesday and it has some calls which will impact dramatically on pre-post markets

The only good news for Australian trainers is the already expected decisions that unbeaten three-year-old, Chase Auckland, will stay home, as does Elle Mac, while Dream About Me also does as she struggles with soundness. “Chase Auckland has had a couple of hard runs and been great in them but you can’t do that every week so he will miss the derbies in Victoria and NSW and be set for the Northern Derby here,” explains Purdon. “And Dream About Me hasn’t been quite right so won’t go to

Australia but we will have Piccadilly Princess and Partyon for the mares races over there.” Even without Chase Auckland, the three-year-old team for the derbies in Australia will contain The Devils Own and All U Need Is Faith (NSW), Spankem and Ashley Locaz (Victoria and then possibly NSW). But the other big surprise is that Heaven Rocks will take his unique brand of crazy to both Victoria and NSW, after stopping in at Cambridge tomorrow night for the $60,000 Flying Mile. “I was happy with him in the Auckland Cup and after Cambridge he will go to the Ballarat Cup and the Hunter Cup, with Laz going to the Hunter as well. “Then they will both go to NSW to try and qualify for the Miracle Mile.” Vincent and Titan Banner will be waiting for their mates at Menangle, with the pair to skip Victoria, and Vincent will race

in lead ups to the Chariots Of Fire on February 10 and Titan Banner in free-for-alls before the Miracle Mile preludes on February 17. That raises the very real possibility if Ultimate Machete qualifies for the Chariots Of Fire and races well there, the All Stars could have five horses in the running for a Miracle Mile invite. “It is possible that could happen but we are not getting carried away with that, there is a lot of racing to go before then,” said Purdon. The one window of opportunity the stable has left open for their rivals is the NSW Oaks, for which they won’t have their best fillies in action. “It clashes with the Sales Series at Addington so fillies like Elle Mac will stay home and Bettor Trix and Bare Knuckle will be our NSW Oaks pair.” –NZ Herald

Skoda Kodiaq worthy car of the year winner By Ross Kiddie THE New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild Car of the Year Award is by far the country’s most prestigious. As a long-term guild member I’m well aware of the criteria that go into selecting the finalists, and the comprehensive evaluation process that goes into determining the winner. The award for end-ofyear 2017 went to a worthy winner and a vehicle which ended up close to the top in my vote, it was Skoda’s Kodiaq, a five or sevenseater sport utility vehicle. While many people are quick to point out the Kodiaq’s similarity with Volkswagen’s Tiguan, I don’t see it as being the same vehicle. Sure, there are many similarities and that’s not surprising, the two share the same platform and are essentially built by the same company, Volkswagen has a major shareholding in the Czech Republic’s Skoda administration. That aside, the Kodiaq is a pretty clever piece of kit. Regular readers will recall my entry-level Ambition evaluation in these columns in October, I remarked then that it was an amazing vehicle at $39,990 and, even though it was a step into a fivemodel range, the price and capability had instant appeal to me. This evaluation focuses on a model a bit nearer to the top of the range, the 2-litre, petrol-powered Style which has four-wheeldrive, seven seats and lists at $54,290. Only the diesel-engined variant is more expensive at $58,290. However, bear in mind that the range starts at under $40k for the 1.4-litre petrol car I tested previously, and it is a seriously good vehicle. In fact, it would be the car for me, sure, it’s nice to have the power of the 2-litre but the wee 1.4 punches well above its weight. Skoda rates the 1984cc unit at 132kW and 320Nm. In true European enginebuilding fashion the turbocharged unit develops a lot of its power low in the rev band. Peak power arrives all of the way from 3900pm to 6000rpm and maximum torque comes in at 1400rpm and meets the point of peak power. That being the case, there

is a minuscule amount of power drop-off, the entire acceleration and transmission process is seamless. The latter is a seven-speed direct shift automatic, and without the power-robbing characteristics of a torque converter the way the power process is developed is simply extraordinary. The Kodiaq Style is quick with an 8.2sec standstill to 100km/h acceleration time and it will scoot through a highway overtake in 4.9sec – 80km/h to 120km/h. • Price – Skoda Kodiaq Style, $54,290 • Dimensions – Length, 4697mm; width, 1882mm; height, 1676mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, four-wheeldrive, 1984cc, 132kW, 320Nm, seven-speed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 8.2sec • Fuel usage – 7.4l/100km

The feel from beneath the throttle is constantly entertaining and encouraging. Sure, the Kodiaq isn’t a sports car but that word is represented in the acronym SUV and the engine is most pleasing. It is also built in the way where fuel usage hasn’t been sacrificed. Skoda also rates it with a 7.4-litre per 100km (38mpg) combined cycle average. It will sip fuel close to that claim at 6l/100km (47mpg) instantaneously at 100km/h with the engine turning over quite relaxed at just 1800rpm. Most of my driving with the test car, over a generous seven days, was at city speed and even though that doesn’t present the best fuel economy result, the dash panel readout was listing a combined average of just

9l/100km (31mpg), which I thought was impressive. On my usual highway loop the Kodiaq cruises quietly and smoothly, it also steers beautifully into a corner. The test car was riding on fabulous Pirelli rubber which provides optimum feedback and response directly to steering input. The suspension is a fully independent mix of struts and multiple links with spring and damper rates well balanced for comfort and the inevitable time the Kodiaq will be asked to traverse undulating ground. While most four-wheeldrives of this ilk can’t be considered genuine offroaders, the Kodiaq is a capable all-road vehicle, and the short shingle road journey I presented it with served to prove how tidy it is in a loose surface environment. Ruts and corrugations are well dealt to and occupant comfort has been a manufacturing priority. The Kodiaq is a sevenseater built the way we expect of the modern SUV. The rear row of seats fold up from the floor, and even though they would only be suitable for short trips for adults, for youngsters, and the slight of build, the rear area is entirely practical. Up front the driver has at his or her command a wealth of functions and high specification fitment. The list is way too comprehensive to detail, but I can report that for around $55k the Kodiaq has specification far greater that I would expect to normally find for this price. That, and its overall capability is why I’m so smitten with it as a vehicle and even though it won’t have its own way in the marketplace it can’t have got away to a better start in the New Zealand SUV market.
